# Enrich in a rule — fill a record's own missing fields

**Enrich** is an action of a list's rule (trigger). It doesn't send a
record anywhere — it fills the record's own missing fields, using the
cheapest route ListPlus can find from the data it already has. Its credits
go to lookups, not to requests to a connected tool.

Enrich is not a pipeline target: a pipeline takes records somewhere else
(a CRM, Slack, an e-mail, another list). An enrichment belongs to exactly
one rule, is set up in that rule and is removed with it. It is not listed
under Pipelines and has no Entries tab.

## Set it up

1. Open the list, click the lightning icon (**Triggers**) and create or
edit a rule. Under **Then**, click **Add action** → **Enrich**. Or
start from the templates **Find work emails** or **Enrich, then pass
   on**.
2. Under **Fields to reach**, pick up to 8 content types (e-mail, phone,
   job title, company …).
3. Set **At most per record**, a credit limit you choose — a step that would
exceed this budget is not started for that record.
4. Choose what happens to the cells: **Fill empty cells only** (default),
**Replace empty and invalid values**, or **Overwrite everything —
   including values entered by hand**.
5. Save the rule. From then on it enriches every record that meets its
conditions by itself; there is no release by hand.

To change the settings later, edit the rule. Deleting the rule, or taking
the Enrich action out of it, ends the enrichment.

## List records only

A rule belongs to a list, so Enrich works on that list's records. A contact
on the Watchlist is enriched by adding it to a list. A **company** on the
Watchlist has its own button: select it under Watchlist → Companies and
click **Complete profile** (see "[Companies on the Watchlist and company
alerts](https://listplus.ai/en/help/inbox-and-saved/watch-companies)").

## What it costs

Credits are only spent for the route that was actually used, up to the
budget you set — a cheaper route that already gets everything needed never
reaches the maximum. Whatever ListPlus finds is kept in the record's
enrichment data even in "Fill empty cells only" mode, so it's available
later even for a cell that stayed untouched this time.

## What you see while it runs

Enrichment can take from a few seconds to a few minutes. While a record is
being enriched, its row carries a moving ring and the last column (the data
column) is animated; the cells fill in as results arrive, for everyone who
has the list open. What could not be enriched — not enough credits, a
provider that doesn't answer — shows under **Flows → To do → Failed or held**,
with the reason and **Try again**.

## FAQ

### What does the Enrich action do?

It fills the record's own missing fields instead of sending it anywhere else, using the cheapest route ListPlus can find from what the record already has. It is an action of a list's rule, set up there; its credits pay for the lookups.

### Does Enrich cost credits?

Yes, for the lookups it runs. You set a credit budget per record (At most per record), and a step that would exceed it simply isn't started for that record.

### Can Enrich work on contacts on my watchlist, not just list records?

Not directly: a rule belongs to a list, so add the contact to a list first. A company on the Watchlist has its own way: select it under Companies and click Complete profile.

### What does the "running" ring on a row mean?

A rule is enriching that record right now; this can take from a few seconds to a few minutes. The ring and the animation in the last column go away once it's done, and the cells show what was found.

### What happens to cells that Enrich doesn't fill?

That depends on the option you chose: Fill empty cells only (default) leaves anything already filled untouched, Replace empty and invalid values also overwrites values that look wrong, and Overwrite everything replaces even values you typed by hand. Whatever is found is kept in the record's enrichment data regardless, even for a cell that stays as it was.

### Can I try Enrich without spending credits?

There is no dry run for a rule's enrichment. The rule's preview shows how many records meet its conditions before you save; to try it on a few, narrow the conditions and set a low limit per record first.

### Can a trigger enrich a record directly?

Yes. In the rule, click Add action and choose Enrich, then pick the fields to reach, the limit per record and what happens to filled cells. The enrichment belongs to that rule and goes when the rule is deleted.
